Review: Nama Foods

For those of you that haven’t heard of it, Nama Foods is a fantastic restaurant serving raw vegan food, tucked away in Notting Hill. After sampling Nama Foods at Fare Healthy last weekend, I knew I needed to go there myself and experience it properly. Often people associate raw vegan food with a mountain of plain lettuce and chopped vegetables, but visit a café which specialises in making raw food, and this idea will be banished from your mind. In my experience, places like Nama Foods are incredibly creative and presentation is always stunningly beautiful- almost (and I must emphasise that ‘almost’) too beautiful to eat.

So yesterday I met my lovely friend Thais for lunch at Nama in Notting Hill. Although the restaurant is relatively small, we were right to get there early, as we were followed by a seemingly never-ending line of customers determined to get their superfood smoothie fix. I follow Nama Foods on Instagram (@namafoods), so I receive a drool-worthy stream of photos in my feed and barely even needed to look at the menu. I chose the Mexican Salad and Thais chose the Sushi platter, and I proceeded to embarrass poor Thais by hovering over our food taking hundreds of photos with my phone- I suppose the advantage of having raw food is that it doesn’t get cold!

The Mexican Salad is based on mixed leaves and herbs, topped with Mexican chilli (which seemed to be made from ingredients including carrot, tomatoes and nuts), chipotle cashew sour cream, guacamole and salsa. It was bursting with flavours and I absolutely loved it.

The Sushi platter was made with kohlrabi ‘rice’, it contained various vegetables and came with a silky sesame dipping sauce and slaw.

For dessert, I decided on the Chocolate Ganache Tart, which was fudgy, rich and felt very indulgent – I’m a raw chocoholic, so if I spot the word ‘chocolate’ on the menu, everything else on offer seems to become invisible. Thais went for the Fermented Blueberry Cheesecake- it was lovely and tangy without being overly sweet.

Thank you Nama Foods for the lovely meal, and thank you Thais, for putting up with me standing over your food with my phone camera. The whole meal was delicious and full of flavour, and I definitely plan on returning!
