It’s no secret that I am a chocoholic- I never get cravings for junk food or for sweets, but dark chocolate is my weakness. I just love the taste and I manage to satisfy my cravings in the healthiest way possible; I eat a little bit of dark chocolate (usually Lindt 90%) every day. Dark chocolate is a much better choice than milk and white as it’s much lower in sugar and richer in flavonoids; substances that help to protect the heart from heart disease.
Another delicious and much healthier alternative to the usual cheap and processed chocolate is raw chocolate. Raw chocolate is made from unroasted cocoa beans and by avoiding heat processing it retains more nutrients. There are a few brands of raw chocolate that I occasionally treat myself to, and one of my favourites is OMBAR, so I was absolutely delighted when they kindly sent me a selection of their chocolate to try.
OMBAR sweetens their organic raw chocolate with coconut sugar, a type of unrefined sugar that is made by crystallising the sap from the coconut and is a more nutritious alternative to white processed sugar. Their chocolate is also free from gluten, dairy and is suitable for vegans. They come in an amazing range of flavours, but my favourites were creamy Coco Mylk, Zingy Lemon & Green Tea and dark 90% raw cacao.
